How to Feel Fulfilled When Nothing Feels “Enough”
It can be so easy to feel like nothing is enough, no matter how hard you work. This feeling as though there is always more you can do is so common. We put so much pressure on ourselves to keep doing more, and then feel guilty for taking breaks.
If this resonates with you, you are not alone. Here are some tips for feeling fulfilled when nothing feels “enough”:
Decide how you will know what “enough” is
How are you defining “enough” right now? Is it feasible, or are you spreading yourself too thin, and holding out for something that isn’t attainable right now–remember that perfection isn’t possible.
Recognize how much you have in your tank at this exact moment, so you can come up with a reasonable estimate.
Sometimes life gets in the way. Striving for something that isn’t feasible right now can lead to disappointment.
Reflection: What feels manageable at this current moment?
Focus on your values
Fulfillment comes from within. We often feel more satisfied when we are focusing on what aligns with our personal values, whether that’s family, friends, loyalty, compassion, spirituality, authenticity, creativity, etc..
What is important to you? Focus on the ways that the work you are doing is in alignment with your values, over achievement.
Activity: Make a list of your top ten values, and circle your top three.
Celebrate small victories and gratitude
It’s important to celebrate the process, over the end result. What are some small wins from this week?
Practicing gratitude can also keep us feeling fulfilled, and remind us of what’s important to us and going well, when life feels overwhelming.
What feels good right now? Recognizing what brings you joy and finding more ways to incorporate this into your schedule can also boost feelings of fulfillment and prevent burnout.
Activity: Make a list of 5 small tasks you completed, or things you are proud of every week, and 5 things you are grateful for.
Focus on the present
When you find your mind wandering to the future, and everything you need to get done, or “should be doing,” try bringing your attention back to the present moment.
Mindfulness exercises like deep-breathing can help ground you in the present.
Activity: Try one of these nervous system resets.
Make time for self-care
When our battery is dead, it can be hard to feel satisfied and see the bright side of situations. Self-care is crucial for recharging our battery. It can be hard to feel fulfilled if we aren’t feeling good inside.
Reflection: What do you do for self-care now? What can you add?
Final Takeaway
It can be really challenging to feel content with where you are, in a city that keeps on moving. Shifting your mindset to celebrating progress over perfection, and what is feasible for you, can feel like a weight was lifted off of your shoulders. Remember that fulfillment comes from within, and that “good enough” is enough sometimes.
