Building Stability in Uncertain Times
Whether you’re going through a life transition, experiencing unemployment, adjusting to a new city, or having general feelings of uncertainty, you’re most likely craving stability.
While feelings of stability may come from support received through friendships, family ties, and romantic relationships, we encourage you to cultivate an inner sense of stability. This will ultimately come from leaning into passions, finding purpose, and establishing a routine.
Remember, you always have yourself. If you’re wondering what that means in practice, read on to learn how to center yourself to find stability when your exterior world is uncertain.
Leaning into Passion
When times are shaky, it can be helpful to get back in touch with yourself. One piece of this practice of self-reflection can be identifying your passions.
If this makes you feel even more lost, here are some questions that might help:
What has brought you joy throughout your life?
What is an activity from your childhood that you would like to revisit?
What inspires you?
And, here are some activities that may bring about some clarity:
Create a collage and pay attention to which images you’re gravitating toward
Try to journal with the word passion guiding you and see which themes come up
Look back at old photos on your camera roll with an eye for when you remember feeling happy. What were you doing?
Finding Purpose
With your passions in mind, find an outlet to make them feel meaningful. This can be very personal and look like carving out time to research and write about a topic that interests you, whether or not you aim to publish your thoughts. It can also look like volunteering at your local animal shelter, or even adopting a dog. You may also finally sign up for that yoga teacher training you’ve always wanted to do. Or, maybe you want to sign up for a fashion design class, or just practice your techniques at home.
Your purpose does not have to be the way you make a living, but it can be if you want it to.
Establish a Routine
Once you know what’s driving you, intentionally make time for it.
This might look like:
Deciding how much time you want to devote to your passion
Getting a notebook dedicated to ideas related to your new passion and purpose
Dedicating an allotted daily or weekly time to pursuing your new interests
Finding a community of like-minded and trustworthy people to collaborate with
Remember
When the outside world is uncertain, you can center and stabilize yourself. You can make your inner-world what drives your relationship to the exterior.
